Going down

Many countries are struggling to govern themselves, and the US apparently feels more threatened by these failing states than by conquering ones. Around 2 billion people live in countries in danger of collapse -- because of corruption, poverty, famine, authoritarian government -- the causes are many. Which are the failed states? And why are they failing? ForeignPolicy.com has The Failed States Index if you want to find out. Ivory Coast tops the league. Haiti is there, along with Afghanistan and Iraq. Thirteen of the top 20 are in Africa. The index and related materials are at http://www.foreignpolicy.com/story/cms.php?story_id=3098&fpsrc=Primer050725. Grim reading.

Spot of bother

John Howard seems to have got himself into a spot of bother with his 'reforms' to industrial relations. A good place to find out what's happening is at Jim McDonald's site. The page, Industrial Relations Reconstruction in Australia, has the latest updates and information on workplace reform. The page links to a number of media, sources, comments and news. See it at http://www.mcdonald-assocs.com/irreforms/recon.htm.
